August 18, 2024. Estimating crowd sizes at political rally's

Who are you kidding that in 2 weeks you worked 50 new countries running only 600 milliwatts on SSB? This is like estimating crowd sizes for a certain person's rally. Somehow that many countries running less than 1-watt QRP in two weeks, seems like a Pinocchio tale. But we are here to talk about things radio, homebrew rigs and new and improved chick magnets.

First out of the Cracker Jack Box is Todd's, (K7TFC) latest newsletter from Mostly DIY RF.com where he has just opened up a new build lot for the P3ST.

It seems like there now are about 85 P3ST builds worldwide that originated from the same guy who actually mentions Bikini Bull Riding in the same breath. But wait more new stuff like the MAR6+ MMIC board and a board or full built kit for the W3NQN Low Pass Filters. These filters are a must have for any rig you build. Thanks Todd!

Work continues on my new operating position, and I am quite pleased. This is a local computer that has 5 SDR programs installed to cover two commercial radios (Hermes Lite 2.0 and the Proficio). Three programs are for the HL2 and two for the Proficio. I really can read your signal down to 1Hz.

The three HL2 SDR software packages have audio spectrum control panel menus that can "fine tune" the received and transmitted audio spectrum so that the signals will have a balance of highs and lows. The SDR Console Software I think can have up to 8 receiver slices displayed that you can observe simultaneously. I really do need that 50-inch monitor.

The video while highlighting the HL2 SDR is a testament ranging from something old (KWM-1) to something new (remotely operated HL2). I find it fascinating that the SDR Console software does not really care if it is connected to a $4-5K FLEX or Apache Anon or my $400 Hermes Lite 2. It just gives you a whole new experience at what a SDR can really do.

Without question there is a certain magic to operating a simple analog VFO, homebrew filter radio built on a wooden plank. But with the HL2, there is the audio and video display magic rivaling the Mr. Lincoln exhibit at Disneyland. I best describe this as a 29A versus a 44DD.
